We look back with pleasure at the days pre-pandemic.
There is never a typical visitor. In the year preceding the pandemic, we shared experiences with many people from around the world from many cultures and backgrounds, more than we ever had before. This is both exciting and challenging. As educators, we try and meet the needs of various audiences to foster unique and meaningful experiences at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, whether they are visiting from Osaka, Japan or Henderson, Nevada.
During 2018-2019, we reached 53,000 people and successfully held over 400 educational programs and interpretive opportunities to various groups of visitors including at-risk youth, special needs groups, children, adults, and senior groups alike. Participants of our programming explored topics ranging from the historical and cultural significance of petroglyphs and pictographs throughout the canyon walls to the geology that helped shape those canyons. Programs and subjects touched on biodiversity, astronomy, and even weather and climate issue.
Our goal with interpretive programming is to reach individuals in a unique and meaningful way so that they may take away from their visit to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area great knowledge, make connections to the land, be inspired by the value of these majestic resources, and feel empowered to protect it.
We expect to emerge from the pandemic strong, with more appreciation and gratefulness to our visitors, and inspired to ensure the service we provide makes as great an impact as possible.
Janis Kadlec is our Director of Interpretive Services.
